I used to have a pair of Smith brand sunglasses worth around $150! (I got them cheaper) and then my boyfriend lost them. He cannot understand why he should fork over more money for another pair of Smith polarized glasses for me instead of buying the cheap sunglasses found anywhere. I try to answer him, but what should be my argument? I just think they're much better quality and worth paying more ONCE than buying numerous "cheap" glasses over my lifetime. Help! I need to convince him!
Polarized glass is designed an treated to block either horizontal or vertical light. This treatment process can only be completed on high quality lenses and the process itself makes the completed lenses more effective at blocking light and, also, more expensive.
The reason that you should try not to wear cheapie sunglasses -- with any consistancy -- is bacuase the lenses are of such poor quality that they can actual harm your eyesight (because your eyes are constantly having to adjust to sharpen your view through cheap plastic).

I've been looking to finally upgrade from my old reliable Nautica CR-39 Polarized Sunglasses that I've had since late 2001. I've been looking at Smith Optics; The "Theory" model caught my attention because I like the smaller sized frames that don't take up half your face. My main questions are
How are Smith sunglasses in general. I would primarily use them for casual wear or driving, and use during contact sports such as football/baseball.
Are the Polarchromic/Photochromic lenses worth the extra $39 dollars?
I like my photochromic lenses. They darken on hazy days to keep the glare down and they change pretty fast when I go inside. Definately worth the investment.

I recently received a pair of Smith sunglasses with interchangable lenses. They came with a set of: black polarized, clear, amber, and yellow lenses. Which lens set is used in which type of light setting? Thanks!
The polarized are made for high light situations. Amber cuts out certain light frequencies, I want to say the blue light. When I go fishing, they work a lot better than the Polarized lenses because they seem to increase the contrast. The clear lenses are made to keep wind out of the eyes. I use my clears when fishing or riding my bike in windy conditions so my contacts don't dry out. I use the yellows in low light conditions like riding my bike early morning early evening.
NOTE: Almost all sunglass lenses, no matter what the color are not made with the intent of being safety glasses. This is stated in the manual (yes, I have read the manual for sunglasses I bought). They are not made from impact resistant plastics, and could shatter. Almost all the major sunglass makers produce sunglass intended as safety glasses for work situations and shooting.
Hope this helps you.
I have been trying to find the right pair of Smith Optics or Maui Jim sunglasses and can't find anything that fits my face. I tend to buy them and then lose them within a few months. Spending 150.00 per pair gets old fast. I just picked up two pair of Calcutta polarized glasses, and apart from the frames feeling a bit plasticy, they seem good to me.
What I want to know it, are they providing the same UV protection that the expensive glasses provide? If so, I say heck, but 5 pair and don't worry about losing them all the time. But seriously, if they do provide the same UV protection, what are the other benefits of the high end glasses?
The more expensive glasses will also have optical quality lenses that will be distortion free.
A lot of the cheapos will have enough distortion in the lenses to cause your eyes to get tired faster , although a lot of them aren't too bad at all.
The UV protection is the same though.
The more expensive ones also have a much higher quality frame too of course, so it isn't " just the name " you are paying for.
