What kinds of sunglasses and brands do the U.S Military uses?
My brother uses whatever he likes. Right now he wears Maui Jim's. He actually left his last pair in Iraq before he came back. He used to wear Oakleys, and I got him a pair (all black) from Backcountry.com a few years back. They have more styles - specifically the military look of Oakleys.
Vermont's Barre Army Navy has a large selection of Military eye-wear including Goggles, Sunglasses by American Optics, Smith and Wesson and More!
They gave us some ballistic glasses that were not only tinted, but made by Oakley. They are pretty sweet so I am going to say they are important. I guess the main purpose is that the sun won't be blinding you as much as you can better see what is going on around you (situation awareness).

Bit of a brain poof. I saw an animated version of him on The Critic awhile back and ever since have been kicking myself for not remembering his name, country, etc.
What I remember:
* Always wore a tannish military uniform and hat, then a pair of sunglasses. (I believe aviators)
* Tannish skin and black hair, possibly middle eastern or central American.
I believe he was also at the pool party in the Petoria episode of Family Guy.
Khadafi of Libya is almost always pictured in aviator sunglasses. It was probably him.
what brand and model?
I personally didn't like wiley-x's. I thought they got dinged up a little to easily. I'd have to go with Oakley Flak or Half Jackets. And the polarized lenses are a must. Even with the polarized lenses only $70 through the military sales.
Will the military put prescription lenses in your sunglasses?
Both of the above answers are correct.
If you want the BCG style then go to your Post hospital to get an appointment.
If you want a more stylish pair pay for them out of your pocket but remember to stay within AR-670-1 regulations. No mirrored or colored lens. Just Black or Grey shades. Same goes for the frames.
If you are MOB'ing to go overseas then usually sunglasses are issued to all trooops, Oakley's right now, but if you wear glasses another type is issued with inserts made for them and they just snap in. Not bad looking, not Oakley's but good glasses with replaceable protective lens.

About Military Sunglasses
