Who made them a fashion statement?

Not until the twentieth century did sunglasses begin to be utilized for UV ray protection purposes. In the 1920s, Sam Foster introduced the sunglasses to the American public. At that time the lenses were beginning to be manufactured to protect the eyes from the sun. Sam Foster began selling sunglasses in Atlantic City, NJ, and slowly but surely ensuring their popularity.

And in the 1930, Edwin H. Land, commenced another phenomenon by using his patented Polaroid filter by polarizing the lenses. At this time, sunglasses began to gain their popularity at an even faster rate. Famous movie stars and musicians ensured the sunglasses’ stardom by wearing them in public and in front of the camera.

Why were they first invented...and how were they used?

The original sunglasses trendsetters were Chinese judges who began wearing sunglasses - or quartz lenses, tinted by smoke- in order to cover their eye expressions, and thus their opinions. It seems that the initial purpose of sunglasses was not even to protect the eyes against the sun; it was to protect the eyes of important decision makers from unwanted spectators.

Do you think it was stupid of Bausch & Lomb to sell Ray-Ban to?

Italian Luxottica Group?

I mean hello, the brand of sunglasses has a cult status, a celebrity status. It is the most popular brand of sunglasses in the world. It's been featured on the big screen more than any designer sunglasses in history.

And in 1998, the brand sold 1,000,000 units of sunglasses, then the succeeding year of 1999, Bausch & Lomb sold it to Italian Luxottica Group. I don't get it. And they sold it for $640 million only?????????? They would earn way more than that amount if they had retained the brand.

I've read an article wherein it says they sold it so they could focus on their vision care, etc. It still doesn't make sense.

I read in another article, that when they sold the brand, it caused a hefty slice off their sales?

Why in the world would they sell the most popular brand of sunglasses in the world to their competitor when they were the ones who was responsible for establishing it's name. it's just INSANE!!!!!
Bausch & Lomb created two of the most imitated styles the "aviator" and "wayfarer" and wayfarer is considered as the most popular style of sunglasses. Bausch & Lomb also designed Predator.

They made all the classic and popular design of their sunglasses and establish it's name and sold it another company who did nothing to make ray ban what it is today and that company is the one getting the benefit right now since they own that brand now.

Wow yeah, i didnt know that but that was pretty stupid. Ray-Bans are only getting more popular too...

The eyeglasses online have been the must-have articles for fashion guys in summer. As to the invention of sunglasses, there are many different versions. It is easy to understand that all of the countries want to be the cradleland of the sunglass now that it is so popular now. But there can be only one mother country, and which can it be?

There have been at least three countries who have claimed that they first invented glasses. 500 years ago, a Spanish missionary mentioned in his book that he had brought eyeglasses from China to Spain. While, there is no real object as evidence. Another version goes like that: 500 year ago, Eskimo used a kind of goggles that were made of wood. Actually, there were two seams on a long plank, which surely can’t be viewed as sunglasses.

A believable saying is that the modern sunglass was invented by Europeans. The image of...
