Why do the soldiers from the Australian army always wear sunglasses?

Every time I see a pcture of soldiers in iraq of afghanistan, they are all have their helmets, rifles, body armour, plus their sunglasses. Do they give them out as standard equipment or something?

I reckon they just look cool wearing them.


You haven't been there, It's hazy. The US military has a policy to remove you sunglasses when talking to the press but we all wear them

Army wearing sunglasses on head?

Why does the Army care about wearing sunglasses on the head? I've looked up in several regulations and can't find anything, including AR 670-1 & SH 1- something. NCOs and Officers that seem to have a problem with it i suspect must be getting it from somewhere but where?


It is in there. It basically says that you either wear them the right way (on your face but not while indoors or in formation unless you have a sunglasses profile) or not at all. Putting them on top of your head, while fashionable, is not authorized.

Do they allow you to wear "civilian" sunglasses (a.k.a. my aviators)


you can wear sunglasses when not in formation as long as they fit in the army regs (black or gray lenses, non polarized, black or gray frames, no overly-visible logoes). during deployment you're unit might allow you to wear them in formation.
the army issues sunglasses for deployment, each unit is different, mine issued oakley M-frames.

Is there a company that refurbishes old sunglasses?

I have an old pair of sunglasses that were my fathers. He got them when he was in the Army. The lenses are glass and have what look to be gaskets of some sort that hold them in the frames. The gaskets themselves are bad.


You can cut new gaskets out of flat rubbery matterial. Just use the old gaskets to make a template.
