Air Force Sunglasses

IF and when required, would I need to purchase sunglasses or goggles or are they supplied as sunglasses, even though soldiers work in bright lights in Iraq or Afghanistan, are known in this country as "desirables". Just wondered.

Also would I get them prescriptioned since I wear glasses and don't want to be the odd one out suffering from sunlight damage if I get deployed!

the army will issue you goggles and depending on the unit they might even give you sunglasses, i know ive seen people walking around with the "BCG" sunglasses. and as you will find out even if they do give you the stuff youll buy your own because it is better and the only thing about htat is that you need to make sure you are within the regulation for it like sunglasses have to be non-reflective shade of grey green or brown, a certain diameter and stuff like that AR670-1

I basically have a condition where my eye has what is known as an iris coloboma. This eye can be very sensitive to the sun forcing me to squint and making visibility a little hard for me. My other eye is normal however so no concern with that. My question is, will they allow me to wear some prescribed sunglasses when i get to basic, or am i going to have to try and go to basic at lackland when its mostly cold and cloudy to avoid having to squint in the sun all day

If you passed all your tests at MEPS, and the Air Force knows about your problem, I would imagine they are just going to tell you to deal with it. You should have another physical examination when you get to basic, I would let them know then to see what they can do. If its that much of an issue, they wouldn't allow you to go I would think.

You don't get issued sunglasses as they're not a "needed" item and they are not authorized for in flight on small craft.

HOWEVER, you are allowed to where conservative sunglasses while outdoors in uniform and Aviator style glasses ARE on the allowed list of what you can choose to purchase and wear... if you want to look like tom cruise.

I got some "US Air Force Style" aviator sunglasses, and while I'm sure they aren't genuine standard issue stuff, they are sturdy and high quality. But this little plastic bar has me perplexed and annoyed. These are big sunglasses, but they won't fit because this plastic bar keeps them from sitting high enough on my nose. What is it for? Any reason I shouldn't cut the thing off?
To the first answerer: You can't see it in the photos, but the metal pieces aren't connected , they just go on long enough to make sure the plastic bit stays in place.

i think you should.
but then again, it might be there to hold the lenses together.
