Hello I am a junior chemistry major (currently in Organic Chemistry II and Physical Chemistry II) and also have worked at an Analytical Chemistry Lab for 1 year. I also wear soft, hydrophilic contact lens that I put in cleaning solution every night and reuse for 2 weeks. I also always wear safety glasses when working in either school labs or work labs, so I am not worried about splashes into my eyes while wearing contacts so much. However, I am wondering the potential impact of various volatile substances absorbing into the contact lens and potentially being held against the eye for a prolonged period of time. I don't work with anything particularly volatile, and try to use hoods and keep my distance whenever possible. I am wondering how safe it is to wear lens in laboratory (with safety goggles). I would appreciate info from anyone who has had any negative effects, extensive chemistry knowledge or knowledge of eyes. Also are a different type safer (daily or hard) etc.
Thanks
I really cant help out to much but i am in a biology class and we are working with the cadavers right now and even though we have saftey googles on we are still told not to waer our contacts because there is a possibility of sticking to them
3M™ Nitrous™ and Virtua™ Sport Corded earplug Control System (CCS) product overview.
I just got out of chemistry lab and the lab didn't have safety goggles for us the first and day. We washed all our lab equipment with acetone, water and soap. What is the chance of acetone evaporating in to my eyes. I cleaned my contact lens and let it soak in the contact solution for 30 minutes and now I'm wearing it again. My eyes feel fine. Is there any possibility that being exposed to acetone while wearing contact lens without a goggle could be a problem? I'm scared the irration might show up later in the day.
I think you'll be fine - any irritation from something like acetone would probably occur right away.
That is HORRIBLE of your school not to have safety goggles for you!! You should refuse to participate unless you are protected. Legally you would be in the right.

i need to know what each of these lab equipment are used for:
1.Flask 2. beaker 3. graduated cylinder 4.eye dropper 5. cork/rubber stopper 6. test tube 7. test tube rack 8. test tube clamp 9. test tube brush 10. hand lens 11. petri dish 12. safety goggles 13. forceps 14. triple beam balace 15.funnel
And also its asks on my sheet to draw a diagram of each of these do they mean just a drawing of what they do?? well Thanks in Advance ^^
or a website that list them ^^ thanks
Edit just draw/label what each look like. Usually in chapter 1 or 2 of textbook or lab book. Teach just wants to know that you read looked at because they don't want you lost/confused first day or any day of lab. No time to help you find a 100ml flask trust me with a schedule experiment.Trust me if they say get x,y,z from station drawer. you better know what they are and get them out. Time is of the essence you don't finish experiment ...they know and it prevents you from finishing conclusin of lab etc.
Both flasks and beakers hold liquids etc and have numbers on side in ml/L.
1.Flask - glassware in lab that has a narrower top than beaker. Put strong chemicals in you want to control contact with. ie strong acids/bases etc. Do not want splashig around. Often mix chemical or liquids/powders in titration etc.
2. beaker- most liquids can be placed in these. Weak acids/bases etc.
3. graduated cylinder-Measuring device for liquids. often 100ml in hs labs. but do have larger ones.
4.eye dropper - use when you want to measure out small controlled specific amounts of liquids.
5. cork/rubber stopper - put on top of test tube flask for safe mixing, or prevent spills.
6. test tube -holds small quantities of samples in lab, nonumbers on sides but easy to use and clean.
7. test tube rack -holds your test tubes to prevent breakage, spills, leaks, able to hold various tests of experiment at once, able to use to label /organize experiment
8. test tube clamp-often used to hold test tube especially when heating over bunsen burner
9. test tube brush -use in cleaning of test tubes after experiment
10. hand lens -aid eye to study/observes small granuales of powders/crystals
11. petri dish - augar medium filled plastic/glass dishes to grow organisms/ cultures on. ex mold/bacteria
12. safety goggles -must wear to protect your eyes in lab class
13. forceps - scientific tweezers used to pick up lab specimens/samples
14. triple beam balace - scientific scale used to measure mass in grams during lab.
15.funnel -Use in lab when you want to filter sediments/solids/particles from liquid portion in lab.
Been awhile let me know my grade on this homework assignment after teacher grades. LOL

Flask - if it is a volumetric flask that is used for making up solutions very acurately
Bleaker - generally to hold liquids
Graduated cylinder - for measuring out a required volume of liquid
Eye Dropper - for releasing drops of liquid
Cork/rubber stopper - closing up the openings in flasks
Test tube - for holding small aount of liquids or gases
test tube rack - for holding test tubes on a bench surface
Test tube clamp - for holding test tube racks off a surface
test tube brush - for cleaning out the test tube
Hand lens - for looking at things that are not normally easily visible with the naked eye
Petri dish - a small plastic disk for growing microbes (ie bacteria, fungi) (used in microbiology)
Saftey goggles - these are classed as personal protective equipment (PPE) and are to protects your eyes from harmful splashes
forceps - for picking up things
Triple beam balance - for weighing out accurately
Funnel - funnels are used to get liquids into small opening s more easily to prevent spills

Nice looking, good quality frames *with lenses* for an amazing price...
The lenses include Anti-Reflective, Scratch Resistant and UV protective coatings. Every order also comes with a cleaning cloth, custom case and fitting/tightening tool, absolutely free.
Better yet - I used the coupon code "thankyou" and got a 10% discount. (There is another coupon "tellafriend" for 20% off, but it didn't work for me)
They actually have quite a decent selection of "designer" frames available, and they have an option of uploading a photo of your head so you can "virtually" try on the glasses. Not as good as trying them on in a shop, but a nice feature compared to other online sites. I guess if you could be bothered, you could identify some frames you like then go to an optometrist and try to find the same (or similar) and try it on. Might be hard to do that, though, as the range of frames is huge and most shops can only have a small selection available.
