Thermal shock shatters a patio table?

We were at a party this weekend, shaded porch, but ambient temp in the 90s, high humidity. A group was sitting at a glass top patio table with cool drinks in glass glasses. The table simply exploded and dropped to the floor in safety glass cubes. We were stunned (some minor ankle nicks). No one had hands on table, nothing sharp, no sudden blows, no heavy load on table.

Thermal shock was our only guess. Anyone ever had a similar experience? Ideas?

Was it a Martha Stewart glass table? Those tables explode for no reason whats so ever.

What is the tone of this poem? List at least two words or phrases that support your answer?

In Reference to Her Children
by Anne Bradstreet
I had eight birds hatcht in one nest,
Four Cocks were there, and Hens the rest.
I nurst them up with pain and care,
No cost nor labour did I spare
Till at the last they felt their wing,
Mounted the Trees and learned to sing.
Chief of the Brood then took his flight
To Regions far and left me quite.
My mournful chirps I after send
Till he return, or I do end.
Leave not thy nest, thy Dame and Sire,
Fly back and sing amidst this Quire.
My second bird did take her flight
And with her mate flew out of sight.
Southward they both their course did bend,
And Seasons twain they there did spend,
Till after blown by Southern gales
They Norward steer'd with filled sails.
A prettier bird was no where seen,
Along the Beach, among the treen.
I have a third of colour white
On whom I plac'd no small delight,
Coupled with mate loving and true,
Hath also bid her Dame adieu.
And where Aurora first appears,
She now hath percht to spend her years.
One to the Academy flew
To chat among that learned crew.
Ambition moves still in his breast
That he might chant above the rest,
Striving for more than to do well,
That nightingales he might excell.
My fifth, whose down is yet scarce gone,
Is 'mongst the shrubs and bushes flown
And as his wings increase in strength
On higher boughs he'll perch at length.
My other three still with me nest
Until they're grown, then as the rest,
Or here or there, they'll take their flight,
As is ordain'd, so shall they light.
If birds could weep, then would my tears
Let others know what are my fears
Lest this my brood some harm should catch
And be surpris'd for want of watch
Whilst pecking corn and void of care
They fall un'wares in Fowler's snare;
Or whilst on trees they sit and sing
Some untoward boy at them do fling,
Or whilst allur'd with bell and glass
The net be spread and caught, alas;
Or lest by Lime-twigs they be foil'd;
Or by some greedy hawks be spoil'd.
O would, my young, ye saw my breast
And knew what thoughts there sadly rest.
Great was my pain when I you bred,
Great was my care when I you fed.
Long did I keep you soft and warm
And with my wings kept off all harm.
My cares are more, and fears, than ever,
My throbs such now as 'fore were never.
Alas, my birds, you wisdom want
Of perils you are ignorant.
Oft times in grass, on trees, in flight,
Sore accidents on you may light.
O to your safety have an eye,
So happy may you live and die.
Mean while, my days in tunes I'll spend
Till my weak lays with me shall end.
In shady woods I'll sit and sing
And things that past, to mind I'll bring.
Once young and pleasant, as are you,
But former toys (no joys) adieu!
My age I will not once lament
But sing, my time so near is spent,
And from the top bough take my flight
Into a country beyond sight
Where old ones instantly grow young
And there with seraphims set song.
No seasons cold, nor storms they see
But spring lasts to eternity.
When each of you shall in your nest
Among your young ones take your rest,
In chirping languages oft them tell
You had a Dame that lov'd you well,
That did what could be done for young
And nurst you up till you were strong
And 'fore she once would let you fly
She shew'd you joy and misery,
Taught what was good, and what was ill,
What would save life, and what would kill.
Thus gone, amongst you I may live,
And dead, yet speak and counsel give.
Farewell, my birds, farewell, adieu,
I happy am, if well with you.

The tone is bittersweet. It is a mothers lament over her children growing up. And how she hopes life will be kind to them, and how she worries more now they are grown, without being able to 'watch over ' them.
She hopes that what she has imparted to them will be enough and that they will be safe.
'I nurst them up with pain and care'. - reveals how much she enjoyed being a mother, and yet it was painful also.
'My cares are more and fears than ever' - shows that in adulthood her 'birds' give her greater cause for concern. 'Lest this my brood some harm should catch'
Motherhood will never end is another theme.
What a beautiful poem.

This weekend taking someone shooting who has never gone. What is an impressive thing to shoot?

My school district is hemorrhaging money, and firing teachers left and right (I am a teacher). Suddenly, my old room partner is GONE, and this new young teacher is next door. Guess what? He has never TOUCHED a gun in his life! He is REALLY young! He never had a Dad, only a Mom who was scared of guns, and he played all these gun video games growing up. He REALLY wants to shoot a gun. He wants someone who can teach him how.

When he found out I had guns, he got all excited. I figure I will take him up to the High Desert, in the Mojave or the Saline Valley, and take him shooting. The Safety Goons at the Range make shooting unpleasant, and it's not fun learning to shoot with some idiot two feet away banging off his .44 magnum. Also, if you go into the wild you can shoot at STUFF, not just targets! I remember the first time I saw my Dad fire a .30-06 at the engine block of an abandoned car in the desert. I couldn't believe it went right through like butter.

I have access to the following guns:
1) .243 Sears Model 53 (Winchester Model 70) bolt action with 4x scope. (Inherited)
2) .30-30 Sears Ted Williams (Winchester Model 94) lever action with 3x scope. (Inherited)
3) Star Model B Semi Automatic Pistol in .38 Super.
4) Makarov 9mm Pistol
5) Beretta .25 Auto (Inherited)
6) Smith & Wesson Model 10 Heavy Barrel .38 Special with 4 inch barrel.(Inherited)
7) Colt Woodsman .22 Caliber Automatic Pistol with 6" barrel. (Inherited)
8) High Standard Pump Action .22 Rifle with 24" Barrel.(Inherited)
9) Savage Fox BSE 20 guage double barrel shotgun. (Inherited)

Should I take them ALL and let him shoot them ALL? I sort of dread getting all 9 into the trunk of my Honda Hybrid. My car has no room, and we are going to take lawn chairs, and an ice chest.

Also what can I shoot that is impressive, and blows up nicely? And that can be cleaned up (I don't litter.) I am trying to think of what looks good when you shoot at it? I have access to 20 pound blocks of clay. What else? Wet bound newspaper? Frozen bottles with water inside? I want it to look spectacular when we shoot it, but I don't want to shoot something like glass or old Christmas Tree Bulbs that will be impossible to clean up. Any suggestions? I have hearing protection for him, but he doesn't wear glasses. Do you think I should spin by Big 5, and buy him a cheap pair of Safety Shooting glasses?
Mountain Man

Celestial Seasonings Tea: Tension Tamer with St. John's Wort. Just a suggestion.

I shoot from the sitting position. I have never seen a bench when I go hunting. And 99% of the people who tell me what a great shot they care can't hit a thing from that position.

You can buy a box of clay targets (discs) 90 count for $9.99 at any Big-5 or Dick's Sporting Goods. They blow up nicely when hit by a 22 and are completely biodegradeable. Obviously I wouldn't throw them, but rather, set them up as stationary targets. They will stand up pretty well if you dig them into the soil a little bit.

Definitely buy some safety glasses too. Last week a little piece of stone (?) richocheted back and hit me in the cheek at full speed. I hate to think what that might've done to my eye.

Hurricane Ike Damage?

WE have so much damage. We live in a three story building and are in the second floor condominium. Our roof blew off and it flooded the third floor. It caused our ceiling to collapse. Also our sliding glass doors need to be replaced. The freaking homeowners association insurance ONLY covers the roof but NOT our ceilings or the sliding glass doors. How much are we looking at to fix EVERYTHING. I am talking about electricians to come out, drywall people and new sliding glass doors. The sliding glass doors are our priority simply because the homeowners association will not allow us just to cover it up for long plus we cannot close them anymore as the metal separated from the glass and its a safety issue.

I am in the similar situation as you. I also live in a three story building and am in the second floor condominium. Our roof blew off and it flooded the third floor. It caused our ceiling to collapse.
I think if your HOA insurance has storm insurance, it should cover at least your ceiling?
By the way, will we Ike victims have tax reduction for such repairment?

  • Joy Huang Studio Glass: Blowing Hot Air - The Art of Glass

The Tittot Glass Museum is the kind of place that you go to and wonder why you have never been there before. Housed in a converted glassmaking factory, it has everything from exhibitions of glass art from around the world, live demonstrations of glass blowing, and a variety of hands-on classes for all ages. Situated within easy walking distance of Guandu MRT station, the Tittot is a museum that will appeal to the whole family. Glass has a fascinating history. Ever since it was first discovered in 2500 BC, man has sought ways to shape it to create both beautiful and functional objects. From the Egyptian craftsmen in 1500BC, who used the hollow glass production method to make eating vessels, through the development of glass blowing during the first century AD in the Roman Empire, and up to later advances such as the production of glass sheets perfected by Venetian craftsmen in the 13th century, glasswork has become more and more sophisticated and ornate. And while glasswork existed in China...
