    In normal operation the laser is completely contained behind covers and panels when operating. Each cover has a switch to detect opening of the panel, switches that can shut the laser down if this interlock system is triggered. But those of us who work on and around the laser must work when the laser is on. We have methods of defeating the interlocks. This means working around the exposed beam. One critical piece of kit is a good pair of safety glasses with lenses specifically tuned to absorb the wavelengths of the laser you are working on. When near the beam, you slow down and become very aware of your location. Working around the laser I have formed new habits, learning from co-workers who have used such lasers for many years. Grabbing for the glasses has become second nature when entering the laser enclosure, spending a day with them on my face or at least around my neck ready to use when the shutter is opened and the laser emerges.
