I have a 2005 Saturn Vue and was driving down the highway when my driver's side window exploded in on me. I am trying to determine how this happened and if it could happen again. There were no nicks or cracks in the window prior to this and I have found nothing external (a rock, etc) in my car that could have hit the window and caused the breakage.
I would say its most likely from a rock. The side window probably shattered as its not laminated like the windshield. Doing some searches on the net, I see that only the windshield is laminated to protect from shattered glass.
for example:

but looks as though some car manufacturers are making even the passenger windows with laminated glass.

I like Sen Shelby saying Auto makers were not innovative enough to loan them money.
What part of designing new Models every year for 100 years is not innovative. or Inventing everything from the assembly line to safety glass is not inovative.
the fear must be that the financial industry has everything tied to it, and its demise would mean the demise of modern usa as we all know it. the auto industry has not had to move forward as rapidly as other industries, with quite a captive market and minimal incentive for extensive change. easier to pick on them in hindsight.

Preston Tucker is credited with creating the safety factors incorporated in vehicles amoung them was safety glass, disc brakes, fuel injection, aircraft inspired doors, and seat belts. He also came up with a rear mounted drive system. Did his he or his family ever benefit from his innovations?
Tucker was drug through court and peeled back like a banana.
His car was so far advanced that it frightened the major car companies. He accused them of building death traps and set about to prove he bould build a safer car. He did. He only produced about 50 of his dream cars before he was forced to shut down and abandon his creation " The Tucker"

Improvements in auto windshield repair can give a damaged auto windshield a new life. When you are in need of Scottsdale auto glass services asking the right questions will help you make sure you are taking advantage of the latest repair systems. Until the 1970s it was impossible to repair a damaged windshield to ensure its safety and strength. Your only choice was to replace the entire windshield. Then with the introduction of hard plastic resins windshields could be restore to their original strength. It is to your advantage to use those companies that use the new innovative repair systems.
Windshield glass consists of three layers: a poly layer is sandwiched between outside and inside layers of glass. The flexibility of the middle layer prevents splintering and provides strength to the roof of the automobile. When the outside layer gets a crack or a hole from an object that hits it, air leaks into the poly layer causing contamination. This contamination can be so small that even water can not leak in but the air will result in a brownish stain inside of the windshield. It is important for the technician to remove all the air from the damaged area before a plastic resin is injected.
