Sick Bamboo! Need Help ASAP!?
sunlight for breakfast

hello! I need help with my bamboo! It has been fine for about a year, now all of the sudden there is this sulfur-ish smell and even though I cleaned the bowl, gravel, and rinsed the bamboo roots, the smell came back. Many of the leaves have turned yellow quite suddenly as well. I threw out the gravel it had been sitting in for a year, bleached the small bowl it is in, and bought glass marbles to replace the gravel. The smell is back! What should I do? I love my bamboo and I keep hearing/reading different reasons for the yellow leaves and smell. Please help!

Bamboo does not grow in water, it needs soil, full sun and food.

Re-pot it in a large container with 50% landscape mix and expanded shale, put it outside on the patio, and watch it grow.

It will be dead within a few weeks if you continue at current pace.

Now go drink a beer and relax.

Growing lucky bamboo (dracaena sanderiana)?
Bookworm3

I just got two sticks of lucky bamboo, about 6" in height. I read on the web that the lucky bamboos you buy in stores will not grow any taller. However, I'm a little confused about propagating them by cutting the stalk. Could someone offer me a detailed explanation as to how to do this? I've read a few things online and I'm still confused, so please don't copy and paste, give me your own personal experience with it. If I cut the stalk and replant it (I think that's what the sites are telling me to do), will this grow taller? Also, how long does it take to grow? Does anyone have pictures of their lucky bamboo over time?

Basically, I just want to know how to get a taller plant from the small plant that I bought.

If it matters, I have mine in a small glass fish bowl with glass pebbles/marbles and water by a window that does not get direct sunlight.

Thank you in advance for your help!!
So if I were to cut off the roots by chopping off about an inch of the bottom of the stalk and replanting it would it then be able to grow taller?

Also, what's done to the lucky bamboo before it's sold to make it stop growing?
Ahh nevermind about the first question in the above additional details. I misunderstood.

Hello. The canes of the 6" lucky bamboo will never grow any longer. However, it is the shoot that will grow longer. You may cut off the shoot from your existing cane and plant this. Leave at least one node of the shoot on your old cane so that new plants can grow from them. The portion of the shoot that you cut, stick it into the soil or in a shallow container with water, preventing the leaves from submerged in water. This cutting will form roots. It will however take some time for it to grow since the roots have to form and then there is some sort of a lag period before the plant starts growing fast. By the way, are you using plain water? Your plant may be lacking food. Put in a little fertilizer into the water. I you have compost, get some and dissolve it in water or collect some of the drippings after a rain then add a few drops into your water such that it does not discolor it much. Too much may cause algae especially if your plant is in a sunny place.

Lucky Bamboo???
Bookworm

I bought 3 stalks of lucky bamboo at Wal_mart this evening and I read on the back that you can plant it in soil or water. I chose a very pretty glass vase but the vase was a little big so I chose some stones/pebbles to put in the bottom to support the bamboo. Here in lyes my question. The bamboo roots are snuggled inbetween the pebbles, will the pebbles kill the roots or crush them. They are thin roots and the pebbels are about 1/4'' in diameter.
Also, they didn't come in tubes. They were in clear celephane(sp?) and the roots were rapped in plastic wrap with gel water inside.

they will be fine, i`ve got 6 lucky bamboo plants all in vases with pebbles in, the great thing about these plants are when they get to big for the vase cut them in half and put both peaces back in water and they will both grow.
i started with 1 plant from a 99p store 2yrs ago and now have 6 healthy plants.
hope this helps !

How does the beginning to my story sound?

I want a little feedback on the opening to my story. It's about a teenaged celebrity (Greyson Belle Winters) and her struggles to stay normal with all the pressures on her. Think of it as a novel similar to the books in the "Secrets of My Hollywood Life" series. Please note, this story starts off with a teenhollywood.com article that introduces the relationship between Greyson & Jake, but it isn't featured below.

***

“Greyson? Greyson. Greyson Belle Winters, look up from that stupid iPhone of yours and listen to me!” my mom complains, giving me her best evil eye.

I smile sheepishly and take a sip of my citrus-infused water. “Sorry. I was reading that Teen Hollywood interview. What were you saying?” Jake laughs. My mom sighs. “I was saying, Kate, Penelope, and Elsie should be here any minute. Now turn your gadget off before I smash it with my Gucci.” I take her seriously. Her brand new snakeskin tote weighs close to twelve pounds. I have no idea what she keeps in there.

Just then, Jake’s mom storms out of Cut & Peel’s kitchen door with a tray of food, dressed in her usual printed baby tee and destroyed jeans. She kisses Jake on top of his head and sits down. “Baby greens, hiziki, and cherry salad with a miso dressing alongside an organic rosemary pork roast,” Elsie explains as she sets down the dishes, “I’ve got twenty minutes. Where are Kate and Penelope?” Our agent-publicist duo is surprisingly running late. I can’t ever remember them being late. Actually, I can’t remember being able to go anywhere without being hounded by the paparazzi.

“They’re late. So while we’re waiting, I’ll be in the bathroom.”Cut & Peel is located in a lush garden in Santa Monica, and Elsie wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s open and airy, with glass walls, bamboo furniture, and waterfalls bubbling everywhere. I wave and say hello to a few people I know as I make my way across the spacious seven thousand square foot room to the quiet bathroom. No one is in here except for the bathroom attendant. I regloss my lips and turn sideways to get a good look at myself in the mirror.

“Greyson Belle Winters. What a surprise,” a smooth, sarcastic voice quips from behind me. I whip around, the tie-dyed skirt of my Sass and Bide chiffon dress twirling out around me. It’s Freesia Macintyre, another well-known teen queen. Did I mention that she hates me since I took her number one spot on Teen Vogue’s Most Fashionable Starlets list last year? It’s too bad, because she used to be really nice: to me and to everyone. She’s transformed into the classic Hollywood bad girl now.

“Oh. Hi Freesia. What’s up?” I try to be polite. She smirks and pulls her hair up into a high ponytail. She turns to face the mirror. “Not much,” she starts, which tells me she’s here for something big. “I’m here on a business meeting. About Jack Holton’s new fantasy movie.” I inwardly take her diss. She knows Jack is one of Hollywood’s best directors – one that anyone would die to work with, especially me. I’m a sucker for fantasy movies.

“That’s great, Free.”

“Oh, shut up.” She turns on her four-inch Jimmy Choo wedges to face me. “Stop the fake friend act. And don’t call me Free.” I take a step back, now completely irritated.

“Well, excuse me for trying to be polite,” I say, looking up at her smirk. Why did I have to be only five foot two? “I was trying to be the bigger person.” She rolls her eyes as I head for the door, tipping the attendant who has put on her headphones, most likely to drown her out. “By the way, I think your outfit proves why I was number one of Teen Vogue’s list!” I giggle slightly as I walk away, even though I feel a little bad, too. But, hey, she brought up Jack Holton!

“GREYSON! Hi there, girl!” shrieks Penelope. She’s definitely the more hyper half of the Walsh sisters. She stands up to give me a kiss on the cheek while Kate just sits there, typing away on her Blackberry. She looks up a moment later and smiles at me. “Sorry ‘bout that. Hi Greyson, hi Jake. How’s life?”

“I just had a run-in with the flower witch in the bathroom, if not good.”

“What? Where is it?” Jake jokes, turning to look around the room. Being six minutes older, he likes to take the older brother role and protect me. I never really need the help, but since he’s my best friend I cut him a lot of slack.

I sigh. “It is across the room, holding court with the Holton people.” My crew turns in their seats to look around. They spot Maria Andersen, Jack’s personal assistant, up in the balcony eating area, along with several associates from Emage Pictures talking animatedly with Freesia’s party. Kate smacks down a folder full of prospective offers and stands up with an evil gleam in her eyes. “I’ll be right back.” We watch as she makes her way up the stairs and starts talking to the group.

While everyone tries to read my devious agent’s lips, I read over what Kate left behind. There are plenty of offers for me right now – more than most peopl

It's not my taste. But, looking at from critical perspective I say it has great potential. The descriptionse were sound. You had a firm grasp of the story, guiding the reader where you wanted to. Great job, keep writing. 9/10

"Now, daughter, I cannot have you day dreaming while all the other villagers are hardly working to supply our village with what we need. If I catch you daydreaming again, I will punish you. Now go dig a basketfull of roots, then bring them back to me. Understood?" "Yes, Mother." "You are dismissed."

Would you mind reading my story and commenting what you think? any suggestions welcome!

"Akela!" A loud voice shook me from my day dream. I blinked rapidly and rubbed my eyes, adjusting to the brightness of the Island sun, or Haleakala, which is what we call it. I heard gentle footsteps walking towards me on the rough bamboo floor. " 'Ae, Makuahine?" Mother likes us to talk to her in Hawaiian, but I would much rather talk in English, so if I ever leave this island for the America's, I will be able to speak to people there. "Hele mai!" " 'Ae, Makuahine." She motions for me to come sit next to her while she weaves a beautiful, silk blanket with many fiery colors which remind me of a eastern sunset, just before it vanishes out of sight.
"I keia manawa, Kaikamahine, 'A'ole hiki..." Well, basically she was saying, ""Now, daughter, I cannot have you day dreaming while all the other villagers are hardly working to supply our village with what we need. If I catch you daydreaming again, I will punish you. Now go dig a basketfull of roots, then bring them back to me. Understood?" "Yes, Mother." "You are dismissed."

Here is my life story. I am a Native Islander, and our island is near the chain of islands off the main island Hawaii. We mainly speak the Native Hawaiian language, but we also have some of our own words. Many of the villagers on this island speak English, but not as well as I do. I once stole a large canoe, and, using my superb sense of direction, I found my way to Hawaii. I walked around on the streets, understanding not a word. A kind tourist gave me a book which taught me English.
After a severe punishing from Makuahine (Mother) I spent hours and hours poring over every page, memorizing every line and every word. I even taught myself to write in English, but my handwriting is not wonderful.
I walked barefoot into our large bamboo hut and put on my beaded dress with the beautiful, bright feathers. I made a mental note to myself to stop by Haikeni’s hut on the way to show off my dress. My jewelry popped out at me just a second before I was about to declare myself ready. I grabbed a puka-shell necklace and my coral earrings and put them on. Then I peered at myself through a piece of glass and decided I looked fine.
I chose not to wear my moccasins, because of course, they would get muddy while digging roots and herbs.
I strolled down the dirt road marked with footprints, large and small, and wagon cart tracks and animal prints. I felt the cool wind on my face and the breeze in my dark, black hair. It made my hair flow and cascade down my back like a gentle waterfall. I felt the warm dirt on my open feet and my dress swayed with the wind.
Remembering to go to Makuahine to get one of her colorful, weaved baskets which were strong and would be able to hold all of the roots. Secretly, I hoped that she would give me a small basket so I could finish as quickly as possible. “Ah, nani kaikuahine, keiki, hele, hele, hele.” “Makuahine, may I please have a basket for the roots?” She gives me a stern look, the one she always gives me when I speak to her in English. “ ‘Ae, kaikuahine, l ‘a ma kai ma uka.” “You want me to fish instead?” “ ‘Ae, kaikuahine.” “But Makuahine, I wanted to dig roots!” “ ‘A ‘ole.” “And why not?” “Ho`oninau?” Why did I want to dig roots? All because of Haikeni.
I just melt when I think about him. His gorgeous blue eyes as blue as the sea, and his tousled, sandy brown hair which every strand was just right. His tanned, muscular body with perfect abs I never grew tired of looking at. The way he smiled, with his perfect white teeth and red lips, in the sweetest laid back expression I can’t explain in words.
“I just would rather dig roots.” Her translated response: “Well, daughter, Makua kane (Father) told me they have enough gatherers right now, but do not have enough fishers. I told him you would go, and he would be very disappointed if you didn’t show.”
“Fine, I’ll go.”
This meant I couldn’t go by Haikeni’s hut, for his hut was on the west side of the island and I have to fish on the east side, for the largest fish are there. Well, maybe I’ll have time after.
The palm trees swayed lazily back and forth as the winds increased then stilled, over and over. Grains of sand blew in my face, and the smell of the sea became stronger as I neared the water.

  • Bamboo Spectacle Frames - The Ming Glasses by Chen Chun-Hao and ...

I’ve seen some interesting spectacles before, but never has one appealed to me the way these Ming glasses do. Utterly unique, they are wholly made from bamboo, which makes them all the more appealing because of their sustainability.

Created by designer Chen Chun-Hao and bamboo artist Huang To-En, the Ming glasses are part of the Yii Collection. Combining the revered Chinese Dynasty past with the contemporary hipster present, the Ming glasses have definitely struck gold. At least, for me they have.
