I'm going on a road trip this summer and will be driving. I figured it'd be nice to have some sunglasses (I've been eyeing specific Oakleys - M-Frames and Half Jackets, no pun intended), but I need prescription glasses when I drive. So I figured I'd just get the frames for one of them and get my eye doctor to make me some custom prescription lenses.
BUT...
later this year I will be joining the Canadian Forces Reserves. And many of my friends who are current reservists and reg. force members have told me the issued eyewear protection is total crap, gives you mad headaches, and when you add a prescription lens attachement, you'd rather not see.
So assuming that my section or platoon leader, whoever that may be, let's me use non-issue eyewear, my questions are:
-how do I buy from Oakley prescription M-Frames?
-would a private eye doctor make ballistic-rated custom lenses?
Sorry for long-ness.
Thanks in advance!
M-Frames and Half Jackets cannot have prescription lenses put into them in the normal way, they can only have prescription inserts added behind the sunglass lenses - this is less than ideal for general use. Many other Oakley sunglasses however can hold prescription lenses - these are made by Oakley's lab with the same tints etc. You would need polycarbonate lenses to be 'ballistic-rated'. Oakley prescription lenses are available in polycarbonate.
You just need to find an Oakley supplying optometrist near you - see the Oakley website for a list
Revision Sawfly ballistic shooting glasses are great for airsoft, military, police and range shooting. These are the highest quality ballistic ...
I heard troops over there in Iraq and shizzle get free ballistic sunglasses handed out to them to use in their missions and whatnots, I guess Oakleys or Wiley X sunglasses. That's fine and well, but what about the guys that need to have prescription lenses and don't see 20/20? Do they still get those sunglasses or do they have to buy their own? And if they do get them, does it take longer, since they'll need to be special ordered and fitted with the prescription lenses? And what does ballistic mean anyway? I don't think it will stop bullets.
It's just to keep the sun out of their eyes so they can see to shoot. They're usually Wileys. It takes a while longer for prescription. My moms took like 3 months to get them but she wasn't in Iraq at the time so that might make a difference. She didn't have to pay for them.

i just received an oakley ballistic m frame from ebay today, and i was wondering if the frame accepts regular lenses from oakley. thanks, and if they do, do i just move the extra holder thingy above the frame? is that even removable?
they not removable. if you want neew lenses you must get them done by a professional. any sunglass store would be able to help you
Flame resistant foam padding forms a seal to keep out dust and airborne particles
Interchangeable temple/strap included with each pair
Lenses are treated to prevent fogging, scratching and static
Ok...I've tried about 342342554 different tactical/ballistic/protective eyewears. I've paid between $7.00 and $100 for each pair. ALWAYS...never fails...they end up fogging in some situation or another. Usually they fog the worst when its humid or cold. I live in vegas so neither one of those is a huge problem all the time...but when it is cold, the fog on the inside of the lenses is like no other. I need a FULL SEAL pair of ANZI rated ballistic protective goggles or glasses that will NOT under any circumstance, FOG UP! Anyone know of anything?
There is no such thing.
...but there is a product you can buy that when you apply it to glasses or goggles, it prevents fogging 100%
It's called Cat Crap. I know, the name sounds weird, but many people swear by it, including myself. I wear glasses inside my paintball mask and I apply it to my glasses. They never fog. You just may have to reapply it often depending on how severe the weather/temperature conditions are.
Plus its really cheap too. Buy it. You won't be disappointed.
I am about to enlist in the australian army as either a medical operator or as a rifleman. I require prescription glasses to read words at medium to long distances. I don't usually wear glasses except for school to see the board.
Is it worth me buying a pair of Oakley Ballistic Prescription Sunglasses?
They come with a gray polarised lens (For sunny days), a clear lens (For overcast days and night time). All lenses are military standard ballistic proof, with 100% UV protection. The lenses are also custom made prescription. The Frames are Ballistic standard, made of a fibre able to be tied in knots and stick to your skin when wet, they are also plain black with only a small O for an insignia. They also have a strap so they wont fall off and they are custom moulded to fit your head.
These glasses cost $150-200 which for prescription glasses is an excellent price. Plus they have all the added bonuses.
These glasses seem perfect as they have everything i would need. But would the army allow me to wear them? or would i be required to wear normal prescription glasses? I would much rather these as it covers all bases and are close to indestructible, while i could see myself breaking 2-3 pares of normal glasses (worth $500 a pare remember).
Bernard > Nah we dont get BCG's. They dont issue glasses, but they tell us to bring "Sturdy" glasses to kapooka. After recruit training the free medical kicks in and they'll pay for perscription glasses. But im more wondering if they'll let me sunstitute normal glasses for the clear lensed sunglasses.
For the US Military, I dont believe glasses are permitted. I know that they help pay for (or completely pay for) the Lasik Surgery. The gov't can not afford to have you as a liability should be you in a warzone and your glasses break compromising a mission!! hahahah, Check into that...sounds like a great opportunity you have for yourself! Kudos
