Im going into BCT in June and i heard they have issued new glasses that are more normal looking than the glasses previously issued, is this true?
it depends on where you go for basic training. i have heard the same thing but.....unless you know someone that has just finished basic that had glasses and they tell you then...dont take anyones word for it. and even if you have birth control glasses..lol (ok..bcg-basic combat glasses..the other one is just a joke for the military) you only have to wear them while you are at basic training..then you can wear your regular ones unless you are at the range or something when you would need them.

I'm thinking about joining the Army National Guard. And I don't want to seem whiny, but do I really have to wear those horrible Army-issue glasses? I can't get away w/o wearing glasses or contacts because, without corrective aids, my sight is extremely poor. I.e., absolutely no driving, reading, NOTHING. Would I be allowed to wear my civilian glasses? They aren't flamboyantly colored or oddly shaped--just plain black plastic in a rounded/rectangular shape. Or perhaps wear my contacts?
but if I do have to wear them, are the Army glasses any smaller these days than they used to be? and do you get different frame choices? And after Basic, when I do my weekends and 2-weeks-a-year in the Guard, would I have to wear the Army glasses for those?
And really, does wearing glasses make Basic any harder than those who don't have to? I really hate to wear glasses, I much prefer contacts when I'm working out or working outside. It seems like the glasses in Basic would get all scratched and dirty and slide down your nose from all the sweat and stuff. if anybody has gone through Basic with glasses, I'd appreciate hearing about your experience.
I really appreciate any answers/advice you guys can give me. I won't let such a stupid thing like glasses define whether I serve my country, but I do want to get all the details. I will probably end up serving, but I want to get all possible info first. Thank you!
If you are a past, present, or future Armed Service member, I thank you very much for serving us. God bless America!!
Don't let glasses influence your decision to enlist. The only time you'll have to wear the BCGs is at Basic Training. You can wear almost whatever you want (contacts, conservative civillian frames) when you get back to your Guard unit.
Make sure your prescription is up to date before you leave for Basic, and bring a set of glasses with your current prescription. Do not bring contacts. You will get issued two sets of BCGs in Basic training. Not to worry, though - everyone with bad eyesight will get BCGs too. No one will care. You may also get a set of civilian style glasses issued to you. This is a fairly recent change to Basic Training, but it will be up to your Drill Sergeants when (and if) you can wear them. Really, it's better to wear the BCGs in the field - the last thing you want is for your glasses to break.
At the PX at your Reception Battalion, make sure you purchase at least 2-3 pair of eye glass retaining straps. These will keep your glasses from falling off while you're training. You can also purchase a defogger spray. However, the best thing to prevent your glasses from fogging up is soap. Coat your glasses in soap, then rub the soap off until you can see clearly. It will last longer than the spray, and it's not as "gross" as spit (though spit will work if you're in a pinch). The glasses will be uncomfortable at first, and you might get some small sores on your nose and ears, but these will go away after a week or two.
When you get back to your unit, be careful about wearing contacts in the field - use common sense.
Can you have contacts in the Army National Guard? If not, can I wear my own glasses or do I get the Army issued glasses?
This is a question more specifically for during BCT.
You are going to get issued glasses.
