Chaska Lions: Born to serve

Over the last 50 years, when it has come to raising money, the Chaska Lions have done it all.

“We’ve done everything from selling light bulbs to giving away eyeglasses to organizing pancake breakfasts,” said current President Jim Walters.

Most will probably recognize the Lions as those yellow-vest-wearing, pitchers-of-beer-hawking men and women that buzz around at the Chaska Area Taste and River City Days.

Fundraising is what the Lions do best and they do it all year long to the benefit of charities and organizations located almost exclusively in Chaska.

“We’ve given to TreeHouse, CAP, the Southern Valley Alliance,” Walters noted, adding that last year, they gave away $110,000. 

Some projects are selected by the board and members, while others are the results of written requests made to the Lions.

“It’s all about giving back to the community,” said Walters.

Walters is the first to admit that he joined Lions in 1998 when he was unemployed. At the time, he wanted to network with members in the hopes of landing a job, but he quickly learned that his fellow members weren’t there to help him find work.
