In a chemistry lab, when do you use protective eyewear vs protective goggles?

I'd say, the more danger you expose yourself to, the more protection you need. But this doesn't seem to suffice. I'd like more expansion for this answer, any ideas?

When fumes are involved (and you will be working with A LOT of those in chemistry) and well as possible splashing, you generally need something that does not allow air to vent through. Protective goggles that are meant specifically for chemistry have plugs to keep those fumes/liquids out. It's also why you have eyewash stations in your lab in case someone does not wear their goggles and need to wash the chemicals out of their eyes.

Are the tanning goggles that were given to me not very good?

I went to my apartments community complex in college where they have 2 tanning beds. They provide eyewear for users and I usually tan around twice a week for 12 minutes. Anyway, the goggles seem legit, they look like the eyecandy eyewear from Australian Gold. Anyway, after tanning I notice my eyes are a tad bloodshot.. is this normal? Are they goggles not good? Anyone have any idea?

Does a helmet with a faceshield count as DOT approved eyewear?

I just got a motorcycle and the law here requires DOT approved eyewear if you're on a permit like me. Does the slide-down faceshield count on my half-helmet as meeting this requirement, or do I have to get additional goggles/glasses?

You got it right. If you have a helmet with a full face-shield, this counts as approved eye protection. Al long as you keep your face-shield down.

But here is what I do to go one better.

I bought a pair of motorcycle sunglasses at a local department store. I found these at Wal-Mart for about $25. They look like ordinary sunglasses but have some handy differences.

They have foam around the edges so they act like goggles. They are polarized to prevent glare. They are photo sensitive which makes them automatically lighten or darken as needed. This is handy late in the day when the sun starts going down. They lighten enough that I don't need to pull over to remove them. They have rubber on the pads to help make them stay on better.

I use a full face helmet with a full face-shield. However I like to raise or partially open the face-shield when I am stopped to get a little extra air. It also helps with fogging on cool mornings on my commute to work. These sunglasses give me extra protection so I don't need to immediately lower the face-shield when I start moving again.

I don't wear these because I have to, I wear them because I want to. When I was very young and just starting to ride motorcycles I would occasionally not wear eye protection. It didn't take long and something hit me in the eye. Man did that hurt. It scratched the eyeball. Had to put cream in my eye and keep it covered for about a week. Luckily there was no permanent damage. But I never want this to ever happen again.

What are the effects of not using eyewear in the tanning bed?

Sometimes I use the goggles, and sometimes I don't. I was just wondering if there are any serious effects for not wearing them.
Thanks :-)

Oh, and, please don't put your opinion in an answer. I really don't care if you think the tanning bed is the devil, I'm still going to tan, regardless.

it's HORRIBLE for your eyes if you don't use the googles. The skin on your eyelids is extremely sensitive, and the uv light can damage your eyesight.

Made by reusing empty beer bottles, these goggles are a playful take on eyewear. Pick out your favorite beer, or even make the selection based upon and interesting glass (think Delirium), then either drink it down or send it to me and I’ll take care of it, and the construction of Beer Goggles will begin. Then I will fit any prescription or tint of lenses into the frames and they will be ready to wear out to your local pub.
