Eyewear Reading

We've tried long and hard for my Dad to get reading glasses but he just won't budge. I KNOW how badly he needs them and I would like to get him a pair as a Christmas gift, without having to ask him to go to an eye doctor. I figured he can't say anything about it or refuse them if someone got him a pair. Are there gift certificates out there for this sort of thing? i checked most eyewear specialists and they don't seem to be offering anything. Any help would be most appreciated.

There's no substitute for getting a decent eye exam.
And that's what I'd recommend.

But, apart from the risk of it making people put off getting their eyes seen by a professional, there's no optical harm in ready-made reading glasses. They are widely available, including on-line.

You're going to have to guess the strength, based on his age and the assumption that his distance vision Rx is somewhere near zero.
45 => +1.00
50 => +1.50
55 => +1.75
60+ => 2.25.
If of African or Asian ethnicity, add five years to his age. to get the left hand number.

That's a very rough rule-of thumb, but it's the best I can do...

"I'm younger than the examples given and my reading glasses are far stronger than suggested."

The strong suspicion there would be that you're "carrying" an appreciable longsighted Rx for distance, and having to use up some of your reading reserves to get optimal distance vision.

all of those stores and others like it sell genuine vintage glasses, but they are in perfect condition so be prepared to spend up to $400 on these frames. You can always wander random consignment shops in large cities....you get lucky, sometimes.

I would like to learn about how the notation describing the frames of eyeglasses should be read.

For example, if a frame is described as 50/19/142, what does that mean? Which one is the Eye? The Bridge? The Temple?

50 is the eye up and down in the lense
19 is the bridge from side to side
142 is the temple the arm

I need a reading glass when I'm at my computer or to read..Recently, ordered a progressive eyewear from an optical shop. Did some examinations and when my eyewear is ready for collection, I tried on and could not even see clearly when I do my reading. Complain to the optician and he insisted that I do not how to use it and make up lots of other excuses. Isn't Optician supposed to help the patient and not just doing sales..How should I deal with it..

You should walk in and demand a new pair that are suitable for your eyes. Chances are he's just trying to avoid doing any extra work.

I was reading though a Car and Driver magazine and saw the promotion and checked it out online but I'm not quite sure if it is the real thing or not. It just seems to good to be true.

I have been wondering this too and i cant figure it out. But i know it says I can get one pair that $250 for $19 dollars with shipping so even if they are super crappy, they cant be worse than a $20 walmart pair.
