Can I get a pair of reading glasses for someone who doesn't have a prescription?

We've tried long and hard for my Dad to get reading glasses but he just won't budge. I KNOW how badly he needs them and I would like to get him a pair as a Christmas gift, without having to ask him to go to an eye doctor. I figured he can't say anything about it or refuse them if someone got him a pair. Are there gift certificates out there for this sort of thing? i checked most eyewear specialists and they don't seem to be offering anything. Any help would be most appreciated.

There's no substitute for getting a decent eye exam.
And that's what I'd recommend.
(the correct advice, *and* my back covered)

But, apart from the risk of it making people put off getting their eyes seen by a professional, there's no optical harm in ready-made reading glasses. They are widely available, including on-line.

Edit for heyteach

You're going to have to guess the strength, based on his age and the assumption that his distance vision Rx is somewhere near zero.
45 => +1.00
50 => +1.50
55 => +1.75
60+ => 2.25.
If of African or Asian ethnicity, add five years to his age. to get the left hand number.

That's a very rough rule-of thumb, but it's the best I can do...

Edit: for heyteach:
"I'm younger than the examples given and my reading glasses are far stronger than suggested."

The strong suspicion there would be that you're "carrying" an appreciable longsighted Rx for distance, and having to use up some of your reading reserves to get optimal distance vision.

Eyewear & Glasses help?

I need some help finding some Tommy Hilfiger reading glasses because my old glasses broke and I want new ones. The only problem is I only have around (and really want to spend) about $30-$80 on them. I've seen them and know this is possible to find them. The only problem is the pair I want normally are expensive.

Thanks a bunch peeps. I appreciate it!!

I see they're listed at 76.00. But I was wanting them for cheaper. If at all possible.

You can probably find very similar frames at one of the eyeglass stores linked from this blog. I've bought glasses from them and been very happy.

They won't be actual Hilfiger brand, but I'm sure you can find something that looks just the same.

Prescription Free Glasses?

If I went to Lenscrafters or some other cheap store and brought in some frames like these:

Approximately how much would it cost to get prescription free lenses put in them?

I found a few look-alikes from my regular store which I shop at. They can give you 0 prescription lenses and they are pretty cheap. It would save you the hassle of going to the stores and waiting even longer for them to cut the lenses and stuff.

What are your views and recommendations on Video Eyewear Glasses?

Do any of you have video eyewear glasses?
I'm interested in buying one but would like to know how clear the screen appears through the glasses.

Ive seen a few offering different size displays including 44" 50" and 80"
Obviously the larger screen would be ideal but does the image appear more blurred. ( the 80" display ive read about is offered with a resolution of 640 x 480 vga... personally i dont think thats enough).

Have any of you viewed the screen with a movie being played?

Can you recommend a specific make or model for the viedo eyewear glasses?

Thanks

It is important to know, that most people who buy these glasses usually sell them soon after, due to the blinding headaches they cause.

If I buy a pair of reading glasses because of the frame, will the eye doctor change the lenses to my prescript?

I want these pair of glasses because of the frame
http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/cata log/productdetail.jsp?_dyncharset=ISO-88 59-1&_dynSessConf=-35745672024727817 66&id=843438&parentid=ACC_EYE_RE ADERS&pushId=ACC_EYE_READERS&pop Id=ACC_EYEWEAR&sortProperties=&n avCount=8&navAction=poppushpush& fromCategoryPage=true&selectedProduc tSize=&selectedProductSize1=&col or=blu

and i was wondering if its possible if i take the glasses to my eye doctor or anyplace and they'll take out the lenses, and switch it for my prescription and put them into them, so i can wear them as normal glasses?

Nice color, I like those glasses. It's really hard to find lighter colored frames right now, I need glasses but I just can't find the right colored frame, they seem to be all so dark right now.

Anyway, maybe you could print that page out and take it to the place you are going to get your glasses from... Maybe they'd be able to give you a bit more information about changing the lenses, or tell you if it would be possible with that pair.

Good luck!
