My husband had his eyes examined on Saturday. The bill came today and I was shocked by the cost of the eye exam. The bill was for $129!
That didn't include any other services by this optometrist. She was trying to add every feature available in modern eyewear. My husband only wears glasses for driving or watching tv. He removes his glasses to read or use the computer. He works at a computer 8 to 9 hours everyday at work. He doesn't wear his glasses while he works on the computer. He never complained about any eye strain or headaches.
This doctor prescribed bifocals not regular bifocals but the more expensive progressive lenses, transitions, high end lenses. The bill would have cost us over $500 for a pair of glasses. That did not even include the exam. With the exam over $629!
I ended up canceling the eyeglass order. But, now we're out $129.
Doesn't this seem very high just for glasses. My glasses were expensive because of my poor eyesight which required special lenses. I understand the money spent for the special prescription.
Hi---
You should not be out the exam fee.
YOU OWN the eyeglass rx once it is paid for and you can bring it anywhere
to have it filled.
Ask for your RX.
If he likes, he can use that rx to get a basic pair of distance-only glasses at any optical shop.
Today, high-end progressives with a good frame and transitions CAN
cost $500. so it's not a rip-off---it's just not what you may want or need at this time.
Also, doctors don't really "prescribe" bifocals or progressives, etc.
it is just a recommendation.
So, the Rx has all the info for you to get whatever you want.
Good luck

Common questions of bifocal contact lenses
Have been created to offer both close up and distance vision. These multifunctional contact lenses also require an adaption period as long as six weeks, during which night glare, shadows and haziness may occur. Multifocal contact lenses can still be customized to provide clearer distance vision or near vision, according to personal needs. Currently, trifocal lenses are also available.
Some people are bothered by unsatisfying reading vision from bifocal lenses or monovision contacts. In these individuals, there is “shadow” while focusing on small print. Actually this problem is caused by improperly prescribed lenses. Among the huge variety of contacts, there are flawed ones. Lasting vision problems require professional remedies from a specialist.
Some patients who have received monovision are still worried about potential harm caused by this technology. It is quite unnecessary that monovision have proved effective in correcting presbyopia. With monovision, one eye is dominantly responsible for distance tasks and the other for near vision. The two eyes still coordinate and work well, although monovision requires weeks of adaption. In fact, most people above 40 can get promising visual correction.
