Metal Eyeglasses Frames

I have an older set of frames, but I just got new updated prescription lenses put in a few months ago. The finish on the metal is starting to wear away, and sometimes the bottom of the frames touch my cheeks and leave green marks on them! *lol*

I really don't want to have to shell out for another set of frames. I also bought a new set of glasses at the time I got these lenses updated. I like the older pair better, so don't want to be committed to only the other new set.

I've asked a few eyeglass places and either they don't really have an answer whether it's possible to refinish them, or I've been told that it used to be done fairly commonly, but now they don't know anyone who does it any more. One more example of our disposable society, I guess! Or a way to force us to pay for new frames each time.

Anyway, I'm wondering if there's a way I can do it on my own so that the exposed metal no longer leaves marks on my cheeks.

Hi Linda,

To solve the problem of the frames leaving marks on your skin, clear nail polish will work just fine.
If you're anything like me, you'll want to tape off the lenses before you "paint"!
The nail polish in colours might work as a refinish too, but I'm not sure I'd be trying it on something that was crucial if it didn't work.
If you have an old pair you don't care about you might give it a try.
Rough them up a bit with fine sandpaper first.

afford new glasses right now, so does anyone have any suggestions of what I can do in the interim to put on or rap around the part that bends over the ears so it doesn't hurt from the metal?

any optometrist will replace them for free or a buck or two I loose one every month or so.

My son broke his glasses for the 2nd time in less than 2 months. They cannot be soddered again, and I think they'll have to be replaced. Can anyone give me a ballpark figure of what they charge for labor on putting current lenses in new frames?

Lenscrafters always has really cheap replacement frames <$100. Also look for back to schoool specials on their website, usually they can give you a discount. The problem is that it is easy to put new lenses in old frames, but not old lenses in new frames. Many stores have a program that gives you free replacements for a year on broken glasses, check with tyour local stores to see if anyone offers this. Was very helpful to my mom when I was growing up.

I am looking to buy some new prescription eyeglasses frames that have a soft and squishy temple sleeve or ear piece part. Most glasses have hard plastic or hard metal temple tips (end piece resting on the ear). Just wondering if there are any frames out there that have a soft temple end, maybe made of foam, squishy gel, etc. Would love to find some frames that are soft on my ears! P.S. I am not interested in drill mount rimless frames. Thanks.
