It can be challenging to try to fit yourself with eyeglasses, but some online stores offer tips.
One site suggests that you select eyeglasses in a size that is close to your current glasses, or that you measure your head with a measuring tape or use your hat size as a reference.
The optical center of your eyeglass lenses is the part that gives you the truest vision, and it should be directly in front of your eyes.
To determine how to place the lenses in your frames so the optical center is customized for your eyes, the eyeglasses lab needs to know the distance between your pupils, or PD.
When shopping online for eyeglasses, one of the easiest ways to choose a frame that will likely fit your face is to match the size of the frame ...
Can you find this out on the frames themselves or do you have to measure?
This tells you everything about eyeglass sizing. Good luck.

I broke my frames for the second time and now my warranty wont cover it.
I am looking into purchasing metal frames from another company.
Is it possible for me to bring my broken glasses to a place like walmart and have them fit me with inexpensive frames? Is it possible for me to do this by myself? What would I need to know?
All I know is that I want strong metal frames that look almost invisible ( I hear there are glasses that have clear fishing line to hold the lenses in). I want the hinges to bend back and forth completely
( to accommodate my face).
If I could do this by myself, please let me know how! Is there a certain way to measure the lenses.....
When I had this problem, I bought a pair of $15.99 reading glasses at the local pharmacy store, took the lenses out, and ordered a new set of lenses (only)- to be inserted into the cheaper frames. I've had the glasses several years now- and the frames are in no way inferior!
There are many places that will put new lenses in frames for you, so just call ahead. However, when shopping for reading glasses (to use for frames), you need to make certain that you only get the kind that have little screws in each corner allowing for the change of the lenses!!!(I do not mean the little screws that hold the "arms" on). Many reading glasses don't have them, and in that area it is painted over- so that you cannot get the old lenses out or put new ones in. If in doubt as to what I mean, just look at your old frames for comparison. better quality reading-glasses DO have those little screws in the upper corners. That is what holds my lenses in, and my frames are just what you said you wanted.
Who knows, you just might find reading-glasses that are the same shape as the lenses you already have. Then you could do it yourself! You would just remove the lenses, unscrew the wire lense-holding area, and pop them in. I'd try taking the glasses with you as you shop for decent reading-glasses. Just hold them up very carefully to see if they fit. If you find one that fits but the hinged arms aren't right, you can usually exchange those from one frame to another even more easily!
God Bless
I was wondering if you have a thick eyeglass Rx, is it customary that you be measured for PD (pupillary distance) and the SH (segment height) to ensure that your eyes are measured to have the optical center sit based on how your eyes are in that particular style of frame?
I was curious because some lenses, your eyes sit higher up towards the upper end of the frame and not necessarily in the horizontal center.
It just seems they only measure the PD (distance between each eye to the inner part of frame, and give no mind to the horizontal placement of your eyeballs to the frame you chose and how the lens sits.
If you wear really strong glasses, it becomes more critical to get it so you are looking through the center of each lens to avoid headaches, distortion, etc. If you are ordering on-line, you might want to consider just buying the empty frames and have the lenses fitted by a local optician, that way he/she can take whatever measurements are necessary to get it right the first time. It will probably cost you less in the long run.
I want to buy vintage eyeglasses online and need to get some that will fit me. How do I use their measurements, how do I measure myself?
Example:
Width of lenses/nosebridge: 58/14mm
Height of front: 2 1/8"
Width of front: 5 1/2"
Length of arm: 5 3/4"
One more question: Can I buy sunglasses frames and have clear prescription lenses fitted into them?
They usually have a tool to measure the width of your face at your optometrist.
2nd Question: Yes you can.

How to measure your Pupil Distance
What is my Pupil Distance?
Pupil distance (PD) is the measurement in millimeters from the center (black spot) in one eye to the center (black spot) to the other eye.
Your PD is not part of your eyeglass prescription usually so ask your eye Doctor to measure your pupil distance when having your eye examination. The last place that made your eyeglasses should have your PD on file and you can ask for this information. The PD is for making your eyeglasses to center the prescription lenses to the center of your eyes otherwise an unwanted prism effect can cause eyestrain.

How can I get my Pupil distance measured?
The best way to get your pupil distance measured is to ask you eye Doctor to take this measurement at the time of your eye exam.
