Prescription Eye Glasses

Prescription Eye Glasses. I have notice a fast difference in prices of Prescription Glasses. Some Optometrist charging close to $500.00 for Glass and Frame and some ( at least I know of one) who charges under $100.00 For the same prescription from a Ophthalmologist. Anybody has experience with this and want know How Come?

It is often difficult for the layman to know the differences from one pair of glasses to another.

One may be wanting to fit you with top of the line Nikon aspheric lenses for instance, and the other one at 100.00 may be giving you just a regular cr-39 lens with a cheap anti scratch coating. The difference in the quality of the frame is bound to affect price too

Then again, some just charge a lot more because they have a higher overhead to cover, and like more exotic vacations.

Optometrists generally are going to be more expensive for the same product than an independant optician will charge.

Shop around. Cheap is not always good, like in anything else...but 500.00 sounds over the top, no matter what you need.

I was wondering what would happen to someone's vision if they wore prescription eye glasses - would the eye become damaged?

They may get a headache, sore eyes, and/or blurry vision while they are wearing them. Usually no permanent damage.

I'm in the Air Force and I'm wondering if tricare provides my Family with prescription eye glasses for free of course, and if i can obtain them on base.

yes...but they won't be stylish and they WILL look nasty. (trust me on this..) if she needs glasses, get the exam on base and get the glasses OFF...they don't really cost that much. ( LensCrafters often run specials)

I am looking into buying a new pair of prescription glasses, and I would like to buy the Ray Ban eyeglasses, not sunglasses.
Where would you buy the frame and would it be a lot of money for just the frame?

There are several places on line that have RX-compatible Rayban frames, here's a couple.

The original Wayfarer style is the RX-5121 and costs about US $90, I'm not sure about the other rayban styles. When you go to the web sites, look under designer glasses, then look for the company Rayban.

I went to pick up my new prescription eye glasses today following cateract surgery on one eye. I could not see clear with the glasses and was told they may have to do slopoff (sp) to the glasses because there is such a difference in my two eyes. What is slopoff (sp)?

Slab-off: A type of lens surfacing process that creates prism in a portion of the lens surface and results in two optical centers. Often used to create vertical prism in the lower portion of one lens for the purpose of alleviating vertical imbalance at near. This process is also known as "Bicentric grinding". This is the most common option for correcting vertical imbalance. Vertical imbalance is a differential vertical prismatic effect between the two eyes. At near, this can be induced by right and left lenses of unequal powers when the wearer drops his or her eyes below the optical centers of the lenses.
