I have 2 pair of eyeglasses that are almost new. I broke my glasses - split the frames in half yesterday. Can I remove tint from my bifocal polycarb glasses? How about my plastic pair?
It would help me a lot.
Thanks,
Daya
Hi there, yeah they can remove the tint, by a special bleaching process, i'm not sure if they will tell you they can though, too much hard work you see! they will have to send it to the lab to get this removed. But some labs wont do it also.
Good luck!
Polycarbonate lenses are suitable for men who participate in sports activities or work in construction, as they are shatter- and impact-resistant ...
What are the tell-tale signs.
there's no really awesome way for a non-optician to be able to tell. all of the signs are very subtle.
poly lenses usually have a birefringence look around the periphery of the lens near where its "squeezed" by the frame. birefringence is this weird, rainbow color looking haze.
if a poly lens is polished on the edge it will also show this rainbow periphery.
poly lenses are very flexible...they can be bent by your hands. other lenses (cr-39 aka plastic, hi index & glass) are all VERY STIFF
poly lenses make a denser, lower sound when you lightly tap them with say your gold ring. glass makes a very high pitched "tink", plastic and poly sound similar, but poly is a duller & lower sound
all of the other ways to tell you'd need special equipment. it takes experience to tell

Aside from trying to break them, is there anything that can be put on the lens to prove it polycarbonate? I did double check when I picked them up from the doctor. I want to make sure the lab did it. Thanks
I'm developing cataracts and live in Florida, with a high uv.
If the lab cut corners or made a mistake, it'll hurt my eyes. Poly blocks uv the best.
I bet you wouldnt take a chance with your eyes- right?
you are absolutley right. these are the only set of eyes you will ever have, so PROTECT THEM!!
i would take them to a different doctors office than where you purchased them, and have them check to see if they are poly(using the method provided by the first person who answered).
i DO NOT recommend that you try to do this yourself. you run the risk of breaking your frame and scratching your lenses. its a quick and easy thing to check, IF YOU HAVE THE CORRECT TOOLS TO DO THIS.
good luck!!

No, sorry...there is no way to remove scratches from any kind of optical lens.
The lenses have to be replaced.
Check where you got them though, they may still be under warranty.
I noticed that in the upper corner of my lens that the sunsensor tint has discolored and appears to have been compromised possibly by incorrect application. Is there any chemical that can be used to remove the tint? The lens is polycarbonate.
Theoretically, yes.
Practically, no. It would be less expensive to simple replace the lens.

Polycarbonate lenses for children
If your children need to wear eyeglasses, polycarbonate lenses would be the best choice. The polycarbonate material was first developed by the aerospace industry and currently you can find polycarbonate in airplane windows, bulletproof windows and riot police shields.
Because polycarbonate lenses are made of polycarbonate, which is 10 times more impact-resistant than other plastics and stronger, they can make your kids perform better during rough-and-tumble play or sports. For the lightweight of polycarbonate lenses, kids don’t have to worry that the eyeglasses may slide down their nose, especially for those who need strong prescriptions. In addition, polycarbonate lenses are much thinner than other glass lenses. To some extent, they are popular among children who want to be visually attractive. Children with vision in one eye will be advised to wear polycarbonate lenses to protect remaining vision as well.
Since polycarbonate can block over 99 percent of harmful UV rays, it is no wonder that many people choose this natural UV filter to protect their eyes. Typically, children spend more time outdoors than adults. This means that their eyes are vulnerable to damaging UV rays. Since excessive UV rays can lead to , it is particularly important for children to choose the eyeglasses that can provider the greatest UV protection.
