Is $490 a reasonable price for Oakley prescription eyeglasses?

I live in California and plan to buy my glasses from Lenscrafters, and I decided that I like the Oakley Jackknife 4.0 frame, which costs $250.00. The Lenscrafters people said that my lenses alone would cost $240, bumping the price up to $490. I have Eyemed insurance, so I would get $120 off of the frame, and $52 off of the lenses, for a total of [(250-120)+(240-52)]*1.0825=[130+188]*1.0825=318*1.0825=344.24. Are these price quotes reasonable? It seems awfully expensive, especially the lenses. I know that other brands of frames are cheaper; do lenses prices generally correspond to the frame price like what I was quoted?
My vision is -6.25 on the right and -5.75 on the left

Most chain opticals that sell Oakley also use Oakley lenses, which are made to your prescription, then coated using the Oakley coatings. They are very expensive.

Some private practice eye docs also participate in Eye Med (we do). They have more freedom in choice of prescription labs. The lab that I use does "oakley style" lenses (curved, neat coatings) for a fraction of the cost of oakley lenses. The quality is just as good, though.

These lenses will still cost you more than "standard" sunglass lenses, and you won't find them everywhere. Sometimes it pays to price shop.

Are there any Oakley prescription glasses that are allowed to be worn under AR 670-1?

As an example http://www.lenscrafters.com/wcsstore/Cus tomB2CStorefrontAssetStoreLC/images/cata log/OKJACKNIFE4.0_6327035.jpg or any of these: http://www.lenscrafters.com/eyeglasses/2 /mens-frames/oakley

Or since they all contain a logo are none of them allowed?

Most Oakley prescription frames are fine, as long as the color is conservative. The logo is a trademark, and not an initial or adornment. Oakley has provided numerous products to the military directly, and they all have the "o" logo. You can find a huge selection of Oakley prescription frames at www.heavyglare.com. They do a lot of ballistic eyewear for the military as well.

What's a website to buy, tough, sturdy, military grade eyeglass frames?

I got a birthday present to get a new pair of glasses.
I'd like to get some really tough ones, but all the ones i've found online look like oakleys and are wrap around ones. I just want some eyeglass looking ones, not crazy sporty/oakley ones. I'd prefer plastic ones. Thanks!

It would help if you can clarify if you're looking for eyeglasses or sunglasses and what your desired uses are.

There are a lot of things at usstandardissue.com (which is a bunch of Oakley stuff, but not all wraparound things like you're talking about, especially in eyeglasses).

If you're really looking for "military grade" though, most things are going to wraparound for function/protection these days. Also keep in mind that for protection many things are designed to ultimately break with a significant enough impact -- the point is to do so in a manner that protects the eye.

suggestion on eyeglass in india ?

hi all, I'm in USA currently, and borke my eyeglasses , I'm coming to India next month and wanted to know if it'll be cheaper to get a designer eyeglass frame in India than USA. How much are eyeglass frame prices such as oakley, Armani, ck ?
I don't need lenses, i'm going to use the same lenses i have because they are in very good condition. I would just need a eyeglass frame. In USA frames are about $150-$300 but i don't know how much are they in India. ?

  • Motorcycle Sun Glasses – A Part of Road Safety | Free Stock Photo ...

If you’ve ever seen the “Terminator” movie series, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, you would have noticed that he was wearing a pair of sun glasses in virtually every scene. The parts where he was riding a motorcycle, chasing the villain – or being chased by one – are especially relevant to this topic. Granted, those shades looked cool on Schwarzenegger’s Terminator, but his motorcycle sun glasses in those movies are hardly practical for real-life motorcycling use. There are several reasons for this – one of which is the biker sunglasses he was using simply seem too casual, in the sense that they don’t seem able to withstand the rigors of traveling at high speeds on the road. But then, the Terminator’s motorcycle sun glasses are part of movie magic. Real life tells a different story.

Biker sunglasses need to be very durable – both the lens and the frame need to be extremely hardy. This is because there is a very real risk of debris flying off the road and hitting the biker in the face. Even if debris, such as a pebble or wood chip, is very small, the speed at which it hits the biker can be very dangerous. If the lens of one’s motorcycle sun glasses is not of good quality, it could break and cause serious injury to the biker. That’s why it is not recommended to wear sunglasses with glass lenses, because although they are resistant to scratches, they can break – especially when hit with debris at 80 miles an hour. Instead, go for biker eyewear whose lenses are made of polycarbonate. This material is very strong and is somewhat lightweight, so it’s well-suited for use in road travel on a motorcycle. High-quality lenses undergo rigorous testing to ensure that they are able to withstand the stress of strong winds or adverse temperatures.
