I was wondering since infants can't complain about their lack of good vision or follow hand signals for eye exams as I've seen done with preschoolers that don't quite recognize the alphabet, how do opticians determine a need for infant glasses? How do they know the right prescription strength for an infant.
This really intrigues me. I hope someone will know and not just speculate.
A good question
The principal instrument used in eye examination is called a "retinoscope".
This instrument sends beam of parallel light into the eye and measures condition of that light as it returns to the examiner's eye.
It may show that the eye is "emmetropic" and requires no power to be normal or it may show a defect such as "far-sightedness" or "near-sightedness" . The examiner can then put a lens in front of the patient's eye until each eye is normal.
He/she can then determine the exact power need for that patient to see clearly and the patient does NOT have to know the alphabet or even say any words.
Of course, in real life the examination is refined by patient response.
