Eyeglass Prices

My wife is looking at new eyeglasses (no bottom frame) and lightweight progressive lenses with all the extras (tint, polarization, ect).

What should we expect to pay?

I paid about $300.00 for lightweight, progressive, transition lenses. I bought them at a membership warehouse place through their optical department and saved about $50.00.

I did get plastic frames, not the bottomless variety and that might make a difference in price.

What is the average price of Eyeglass Lenses? Preferably from Walmart, but I don't mean the frames, I'm talking about just the lenses.

Also, if you had an eye exam to buy contacts, do you have to take another eye exam to buy glasses?

Prices vary by geographical regions. Call and ask. Also ask if they need you to take another eye exam for lenses.

I'm pricing eyeglasses for the first time in many years and I cannot get over the fact that they cost 100, 200 300 and sometimes much more. I know they are made to be adjusted in different places, but they are just plastic and metal. Then the lens price is added on and that's crazy expensive, too. After an eye exam, contact lens fitting/purchase and eyeglass frames and lenses - a person could spend $700 to $1000. Why?

these are all MY OPINIONS...but...there are multiple reasons:

1) the cost of multiple "remakes" and "warranty" replacement is built into the cost of the frame & lenses. something like 15% of all glasses purchases have to be re-done or totally replaced for one reason or another. most of the "warranty" replacement really shouldnt be "warranteed". its patients driving over their glasses, sitting on them, etc etc but they gripe enough that we have to take it back and replace it for nothing.

2) there is no money in contact lens sales anymore

3) there is not very much money in examination fees anymore

so of you buy glasses at a private practice, you're paying for the doctor's student loans, staffing, rent, overhead, materials, expensive equipment, etc etc etc with your glasses purchase. for the record i drive a 1999 dodge pickup, not a lexus or anything ;)

Where can I buy eyeglass temple tips? Hopefully on line.
E-bay doesn't have them.

I have a couple of pair of glasses that the only thing wrong is the Arizona desert dryed out the temple tips. Should be easy to find but I can't.

I know I can get them put on for a hefty price at an eyeglass repair place BUT I don't what that. Help please.

I bought most my glasses from www.optical4less.com They are very cheap. I saw someone mention zenni, I suggest you try O4L instead because they seem to be having problems with their delivery and their customer service is pretty bad. Last time I ordered from zenni they were late a few months! I highly recommend you try O4L they've provided me high quality stuff all the time. ^^ Have fun shopping.
