Is it recommended to wear eyeglasses when in front of the monitor?

My mother recommends using eyeglasses when in front of a monitor or TV because she says that it blocks the radiation from the monitor or TV. However, my classmate discourages me from using it because it the lens of the glasses 'magnifies' the radiation coming through the lens.

You know, if the TV or computer were that dangerous...we wouldn't be using them. We have been watching TV for so many years now, and I have not heard anything about serious side effects from RADIATION. I am sure that glasses can not protect you from it either. You should use them if you can see better though. Sometimes you can see the computer and read better with them off and just wear them for far away. It depends on what feels best for you.

Is it bad to stare or look at the computer monitor while using your own eyeglasses?

An eyeglass is also the same with a magnifier glass. It magnifies a picture or an object. So does the effects of radiation to our eyes strengthen when we use eyeglasses?

eversince i am using computer in my work, my grades went up for some time. my eye doctor told me to relax my eyes from time to time to avoid further rising of the grade as well as tiredness of eyes. you need to look at something cool color to rest the eye.

Eyeglasses no magnification, to protect eyes from monitor?

Basically i'm looking for one of these two:

1. Eyeglasses that protect from the monitor but have no vision correction. As i don't need it, is there such a thin? How much would it cost?

2. How much would it cost to just get eyeglasses that have no vision correction? Just plain. Will that mess up my eyesight?

Thanks for the info.

Hi, I am trained optically; non prescription glasses are called plano lenses, if you had some of these they would not mess up your eyesight as it is just looking through plain glass. However they would not protect you from the effects of a monitor either - the eye strain experienced cannot be taken away with glass as it is not a physical transparent barrier you need - you are focusing in a completely different way when using a monitor and so nothing can help with this, even those who have prescription glasses to help with monitor use are only correcting the problem, not protecting themselves from further damage.

Most opticians will not sell plano lenses unless one eye needs a prescription and the other doesn't; plano lenses for both eyes are not usually available (I don't know why they are not but I worked for Boots Opticians for a long time and they refused to give plano lenses to people who even offered to pay full price as they wanted them for cosmetic purposes but didn't physically need glasses.)

If plano lenses were available in this way they would still be very costly due to the frame cost and the laboratory making the lenses to fit your chosen frames. But as I say, looking through plain glass will not solve the problem of monitor use on your eyes, nothing can other than trying not to use it too much - glasses are a cure for past damage, not a prevention for future damage.

What resolution on computer monitor is best for our eyes?

i have eyeglasses and i dont want any bigger glasses.

Depends on the size of the monitor. A lower resolution will give you bigger print and icons on the screen making them easier to see. But set it too low and you could be missing parts of websites that will fall "off" your screen to the right.

Set it for whatever feels comfortable for you.

The refresh rate on a CRT (tube) monitor should be set as high as you can. Preferably over 75 Hertz. This will reduce eye strain.
