Does anyone know where to get low cost prescription eyeglasses in Dallas, TX?

New to the area. Purchased my last pair of glasses from a discount chain, only paid $39 for the complete pair. This was a small town. There must be a place similar in a metroplex as large as Dallas, TX. Please help! Thanks!

My sister, brother-in-law, and neice all buy their precription glasses on-line and they have had luck doing it this way. Check out this website for more information:

How long do I have to wait to get a new prescription for my glasses and no longer wearing hard contacts?

I have developed severe allergies and can no longer wear my hard contacts. Eye dr. said I should wait about 6 weeks before getting new prescription for glasses so that cornea has completed back to somewhat normal. Has anyone heard of the time length for something like this. My old eyeglass prescription is beginning to get weak for me to see through. Didn't want to spend extra money getting new lenses every two weeks or so.

Recovery time for the cornea to return to a more normal shape varies from person to person. It usually occurs within 4 weeks of discontinuing hard and gas-permeable contact lenses, although it can take as long as 10 weeks. Before filling the eyeglass prescription we usually wait until the eye test known as the refraction yields two successive results that are about the same.

6 weeks sounds like a safe waiting period, but I would be inclined to also test at 5 or 7 weeks to insure that the test results are stable.

Good places to buy eyeglasses online?

I've heard some places are good; others have very slow delivery, etc. I'm not looking for anything fancy or expensive, basically just a spare "emergency" set of bifocals, so I'd like the cheapest I can get away with. What I'm really looking for here is any stories from people who have bought glasses online; both the "this place is good" and "stay away from this site" varieties. And yes, I've got the complete prescription ready, including pupil distance. Thanks!

I buy my eyeglasses from http://www.optical4less.com They are one of the cheapest places to buy from. Their delivery is also faster than most online stores. My last glasses came in around 10 business days, so it's quite fast. Quality is good, site is simple to use, and there is also a virtual try-on of their glasses. I love their services and the store, so check them out.

Wearing eyeglasses full time to correct astigmatism?

My thirteen year old daughter recently had an eye exam at school and was sent home with a note stating that she failed the exam. The school nurse recommended scheduling an eye exam.

My daughter was very hesitant to have the exam so I agreed to have an exam with her at the same time. She really dreaded wearing eyeglasses. I found out after the exam that I also needed eyeglasses. The doctor recommended that both of us wear them full time because both of us had significant amount of astigmatism. This was a complete surprise to me.

My prescription

OD +.25 sph -1.75 cyl axis 45
OS +.50 sph -1.25 cyl axis 170

Her prescription

OD plano -1.25 cyl axis 180
OS -.25 sph -1.00 axis 160

I am trying to set a good example and wear the eyeglasses. It has been almost two weeks. I feel like my vision is distorted and magnified. They also make feel dizzy as well. My daughter has also complained about similar symptoms. This really makes me wonder if we should follow the advice of the doctor or seek another opinion. I called the doctor about the issue and he explained that it would take some time for us to get accustomed to wearing them. How long does this normally take? I have been removing the eyeglasses when I use the computer because the effects seem to be even worse when using it.

Any opinions or advice on what we should do about this situation would be great. I am not sure how much more I can take.
Hello Pedestal, Thank you for detailed response. Here are the answers to the questions you asked.

The doctor did not mention anything about astigmatic amblyopia with my daughter. We were both told we had significant astigmatism and that was it. I will tell my daughter today that she only has to wear the eyeglasses when needed. I suspect she has been doing that already while at school. She really does not like wearing them. She wears a hearing aid in her left ear already and will be getting braces soon. I think eyeglasses probably did not help with her self-image at this point.

After reading your response, I checked my vision in each eye to see if by chance one eye was causing me to react worse than the other. I was fine with the correction in my left eye (dominant eye) and my vision does appear much clearer from that eye with no side effects. The vision in my right eye appears somewhat slanted but clearer when corrected, however I got really dizzy when I covered my left eye.
I have a few more questions for you on this.
Why is the correction in my right eye tricky and asking for trouble?

Should I ask the doctor to lower or remove the prescription from my right eye? Will that help the problem or should I just keep trying to get accustomed to my current prescription?

Unless there is something there you've not stated, (such as evidence of astigmatic amblyopia in your daughter: unlikely with that Rx) "all the time" is totally unnecessary.

You should wear them as much as you and she find them useful. Up to and including all the time, *if that suits you*.

I get very fed up with members of my profession getting over-dogmatic on the use of glasses. Apart from anything else it waters down the force of saying it when we really do need to mean it.

Your Rt Rx is not massive, but exactly something tricky to get used to. Especially when you've settled to being without it.
Sometimes giving the full (and accurate) Rx for such is *not* the right answer.
Do the glasses actually improve the sharpness of your vision, at least some of the time?

If not, I'd be beginning to want a re-check.
And your daughter's Rx might be useful for reading, computer, TV and boardwork, but I see not reason at all, on the information you've given, why she should need to wear it for walking around, or sport.

(1.75 cyl at 45 degrees in someone habituated to being without it? Asking for trouble! What were they thinking of? If they were thinking at all and not just going by the numbers.)

edit:
"The vision in my right eye appears somewhat slanted but clearer when corrected, however I got really dizzy when I covered my left eye."

So this may be the correct Rx, technically, but it is a very unfamiliar one. And especially with the Rt axis of astigmatism diagonal the eye muscles when moving the eye have to shift it a slightly different amount. This tends to "feel" wrong: it's like learning to walk with a different shoe-heel height (and here two different heel heights!) or getting used to walking on a moving boat, rather than solid land (and rememeber the reverse effect: people with "sea-legs" feel odd at first when back on solid land.)

The effect occurs less often when the axis of astigmatism is near the horizontal (170, 180, 10...) or vertical (80, 90, 100) unless the other eye has a widely different axis direction.

If this doesn't settle in a week more at most, the benefit of a reduced or removed cyl Rx in that non-dominant right eye should certainly be investigated. Giving each eye its full Rx and best acuity is only *usually* the best course of action.

What’s going on with my vision? Please help!?

Hello. I was diagnosed with myopia (near-sightedness) when I was like 9 years old, and I have worn glasses ever since. I am 22 years old now and my vision has gotten progressively worse as expected, but in these past months it seems like my vision has been getting a lot worse at a much faster rate. Everything past a foot is a complete blur. I have to literally be like a foot away from the computer monitor in order to read the text. There are three things -- which I’m about to describe in separate paragraphs below -- that are possibly to blame, I just don’t know which one it is exactly and what I can do to fix the problem.

For one, I haven’t gotten a new eyeglass prescription in several years now. Last year I went to the eye doctor and got a prescription for contact lenses, but I rarely wear them, which means I wear my old, outdated glasses almost predominantly the entire day.

Secondly, these old, outdated glasses are broken. I accidently sat on them awhile ago and broke one of the nose rest pads and curved part of of one of the legs. They also got bended to hell, but I did my best to bend them back into shape. The end end result is that they fit on my face, but at an angle because one end is slightly higher than the other. I cannot do anything about it because they’re already on the verge of completely breaking. I have heard that wearing them at an angle is harmful and it strains your vision.

Lastly, in the past months I have been more stressed than usual and I’ve been spending a lot of time on the computer. By a lot of time, I mean almost half-a-day every day (with breaks in between ofcourse). When I’m on the computer at night, my eyes almost always hurt and my vision gets blurry, so I have to massage them constantly. It feels like they are having a hard time focusing.

What do you believe is going on with my eyes? Is it a correctable problem, is it just that my eyes are strained, or is my vision permanently messed up? i know I have been neglectful to my eyes but these past months have not been very good for me and I’m trying to get myself back in order, including my health. I cannot help but think that if I were ever in some kind of emergency, I would be at a severe disadvantage because of my poor eyesight and dire dependance on eyeglasses.

Thanks.

my visions are also getting blur because of sitting in from of the comp almost everyday for long period of time. i also find it hard to focus. this freaks me out seriously!
im sorry i dont know what i can do to help u. but this is what im going to do, let ur eye relax for a few days. dun strain it anymore. dont sit in front of the comp for too long time. hopefully this will make both our visions be good again
