During his meticulous preparations for the upcoming Olympics, short-track speed skater Olivier Jean trekked to an out-of-the-way boutique in Montreal's west end to pick up a key accoutrement.

"I bought a pair of vintage Cazal 863s; they're going to be my podium glasses," Jean said.

Vancouver, and perhaps the sweetest of all would be gold in the men's 5,000-metre relay.

Winning that race would at least partly redress the balance of power that was knocked off kilter when the South Koreans won six gold medals on the short track in 2006.

"I don't think I've ever not had a rivalry with the Koreans in my career," said François-Louis Tremblay, a 29-year-old from Alma, Que., who made his World Cup bow in 1998.

Tremblay is a three-time Olympic medalist, and was part of Canada's last gold-medal winning men's relay squad, in 2002.
