A word to describe 80s eyeglasses?
Rockstar

Do you remember those nerdy glasses that were shaped like aviator sunglasses but were in fact regular eyeglasses, often tinted brown? Is there a word for those? I can't remember.

What was this style of 70s/80s eyeglasses called?
Vintage Eyewear

I'm doing a bit of research for a character in my novel. It's the mid80s and the character is the class gossip in high school. I keep picturing her with those BIG glasses.
Those BIG glasses where the lens was big and round (or octagon) and real glass and the frames reached from the top of your eyebrows down to the middle of your cheek and just as wide from side to side. And sometimes the arms of the glasses joined the eyeframes either at the middle or near the bottom and curved. Sometimes the lenses were tinted pink or blue? The nerdy girls in 80s movies would wear these.
Anyone even know what I'm talking about?
What were they called? Did they have a nickname? This is driving me nuts.
Thank you footprintz. I've tried to go to my local optical shop but the people working there weren't even born in 1980. lol

I know what you are talking about alright. I've been selling them since 1970...

Those inverted frames of the early 80's with the temples at the bottom sure were hidious things , but I don't recall them having a nickname.

They looked like the windshield of a '59 Chevy , but sorry...can't think of a name that was used for them at that time. Except that everyone called them their " upside down glasses"

Pure fashion.

There are only so many things you can do to next year's spectacles to make them different.
Big/small, round/square lenses
Thin/thick rims in a range of materials or rimless.

In the 80's people were wearing great thick heavy lenses because big frames were fashionable.
Recently special "cramped" multifocal lenses have been designed because people want lenses too small to allow the mounting of conventional ones.

(I'm so old I remember flares the first time round.
With tartan wedge inserts too...)

80’s rewind, totally updated eyewear that’s crystal clear…

It’s a tough choice. Do I love the round 80’s eyeglass shape. Or do I love the the clear frame ?

    I’d say it’s a double-whammy on cool sunglasses.

Sienna Miller was spotted the the NYC premiere of “ The September Issue ” sporting clear sunglasses with a slightly tinted lens. We all think that you short sport some transparent frames too. Round if it flatter you, more Wayfarer-inspired, if not.
